A Beginner's Guide to the 4Cs of Diamonds

June 14, 2025By - Sophie Dubois

When shopping for diamonds, you will repeatedly hear about the "4Cs." Established by the GIA, this grading system is the universal standard for evaluating diamond quality.

1. Cut

Cut measures how well a diamond's facets interact with light. A masterfully cut diamond reflects light spectacularly, masking color and clarity imperfections. Always prioritize cut.

2. Color

Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are the rarest, but G-J grades offer excellent value while appearing colorless to the naked eye.

3. Clarity

Clarity evaluates tiny internal characteristics (inclusions) or surface flaws (blemishes). Select "eye-clean" diamonds (like VS1-VS2) to get maximum beauty without premium cost.

4. Carat

Carat refers to the physical weight of the diamond, not its size. Two diamonds of identical carat weight can appear different sizes based on cut proportions.
